It’s another slow week for video game releases, but I do see one game that interests me a bit. Many years ago, the developer Koei, well known for their turn-based strategy games based in Chinese lore decided to change up the formula a bit. Using the same setting and characters from their Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, they decided that the best way to step up the action in a game that’s army vs. army is to make it one person vs. an army! Thus, Dynasty Warriors was born. You pick a somewhat super-powered legendary figure and plow your way through hordes of nameless soldiers, fight bosses, and capture territory for your side. It’s repetitive, but it can be a whole lot of fun tearing your way through lots and lots of enemies. Well, a few years go by and they make many Dynasty Warriors games. But, people grow tired of the formula. How do they reinvigorate the franchise? Giant Robots! Working with the Gundam anime license, they create a game where you play as the pilot of a Gundam Mobile Suit. Various popular characters and mobile suits from different Gundam series are featured. It’s even got the familiar sound effects. It sold well, and people enjoyed the change-up. It was enough to convince them that a sequel should happen. So, this week, Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 hits stores. If you dig giant robots, you might consider picking it up.
