I AM STRANGENAME, SON OF STRANGERNAME HOLDER OF THE KEYS OF NOBODYCARES

A couple of years ago, a couple of pretty enjoyable multiplayer games based around the Star Wars franchise were released.  No, not LEGO Star Wars.  I’m talking about Star Wars Battlefront.  Many people picked them up just because they said “Star Wars” on the box.  Well, what if sci-fi isn’t really your cup of tea? (Earl Grey.  Hot.  Sorry, wrong franchise.)  I’m sure that some of you out there said, “Why can’t we have this great game but with orcs and swords?”  Well, worry no more.  This week marks the release of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest.  It’s just like Star Wars Battlefront, except based on the movies based on the classic fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien.  Guess what.  It’s still fun.  This game is really meant to be multiplayer, as your AI support staff is not as intelligent as your friends despite being fairly decent.  (At least, I hope that your friends are more intelligent.  Scary thought!)  In addition to the “Capture the Control Points” gameplay that is the usual for a title such as this, there are a few additional options.  There’s a “Capture the Ring” mode where two teams battle it out for control of the One Ring.  There are even Deathmatch (kill everyone!) and Team Deathmatch (kill everyone not like us!) modes.  And, for an interesting twist, Hero Team Deatchmatch where one person is a beefed-up character from the film and everyone else does their best to strike him (or her) down with all the nerd rage they still feel for Tom Bombadil being left out of the films.  All in all as the Annual Post-Holiday Game Drought comes to an end, it’s not a bad game to start with for 2009.
